The pearl
Cultured pearls are real pearls, grown within mollusks with human help to begin the process. Natural pearls form without that intervention; the distinction describes how they begin, not whether they are genuine pearls.
Freshwater and saltwater describe where a pearl grows. When choosing a piece, read these descriptions alongside its size, shape and appearance: no single label tells the whole story of its quality.

Understanding quality.
Lustre is the brightness and definition of the reflections on a pearl. Look for how clearly light is reflected, comparing pearls of the same type under similar lighting.
Small marks or variations can occur on a pearl’s surface. Their visibility, position and extent affect its appearance; more pronounced characteristics can also affect durability.
Pearls may be round, oval, drop-shaped or irregular, often called baroque. Roundness can influence value, while the shape you prefer helps give a piece its character.
A pearl has a main body colour and may also show subtle overtones. Consider how these shades work with the setting and the colours you enjoy wearing.
Pearl size is usually given in millimetres and helps you picture its scale within a design. A larger pearl can make a stronger statement, but size alone does not establish quality.
Nacre is the layered material a mollusk deposits to form a nacreous pearl. Its quality contributes to lustre and durability, and cannot be fully assessed from a product photograph.
In a piece with several pearls, matching describes how their lustre, colour, shape and size work together. A harmonious design may use similar pearls or deliberately combine different forms.

Caring for yours.
Before wearing
Apply perfume and cosmetics first, then allow them to dry before putting on your piece.
After wearing
Gently wipe the pearls with a soft, clean cloth.
Storing
Keep the piece separately in a soft pouch or lined compartment, away from jewelry that may scratch the pearls.
Cleaning
Avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaners. For deeper cleaning, ask for advice suited to the pearls, metal and setting.
